The Decatur Daily went big with football.
The Tuscaloosa News went bigger.
Huntsville went biggest. The
Herald-Leader also went big with football, but they turned it into a dog's breakfast with an awkward text box which contained just a bit of text, then jumped. It would have been better to promote the entire story with a summary, rather than starting it and jumping it. In contrast,
The State used a similar photo in the same position to better effect.
San Jose went deep with square mugs of fathers.
The Orange County Register did the same with students.
The
SunSentinel had a mega-map and a spot-on hurricane headline. The
Chronicle-Tribune had fun with healthcare.
The newspaper with the best front design today is the Sunday World-Herald for its 12/5 package.
Less is more. How many times have you heard that? The World-Herald used a minimum number of elements and made generous use of white space for maximum impact.
The headline is terse but evocative; the text is powerful and spare; the heavy black border invokes the seriousness of death; the image is no larger than it needs to be, providing the perfect grace note for the entire package.
