If we've seen this picture once, we've seen it four times, in
The Orange County Register, The Press Democrat, The Record and
The Sacramento Bee – that's what happens when papers cut their staffs. The
Santa Barbara News-Press did it better, as well they should, because the story happened in their backyard.
The
Orlando Sentinel's layout was dramatic, but
Florida Today had a better headline that ultimately produced a better combo of words and pictures – proving once again that content trumps design.
RedEye was eye-catching. We can only hope that Chicagoans know what it meant.
The
Beaver County Times took a cue from yesterday's
Omaha World Herald and used white space to attract attention. The
News & Observer bared all. (See, made ya look!)
On the drowning story, the
Sun-Times' crop was better than the
Tribune's.
The newspaper with the best front design today is the Patriot Ledger for a nicely executed all-promo front.
Do all-promo fronts sell? Sometimes. But more importantly, the Patriot Ledger is trying something that may sell the paper, generate revenue, and ultimately pay for the watchdog journalism that our democracy depends upon. Now that's being a true patriot.
